My Ex from Hell by Tellulah Darling
Released: April 1, 2013
Publisher: Te Da Media
Series: The Blooming Goddess Series #1
a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.
Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy teen yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.
This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.
Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.
Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …
… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.
My Ex From Hell is a YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book one of this teen fantasy romance series. Compared to Kai and Sophie, Romeo and Juliet had it easy.
MY EX FROM HELL was all that the summary promised it would be and more. It opens up with a bang. Sophie is emailing her goddess mother, telling her that she has discovered who she truly is. Then she goes back and explains what exactly happened at that Halloween Dance and how her life changed dramatically after. I won’t recap the story like I usually do because the summary does an excellent job already.
A fair warning now: I’m mainly going to be talking about the awesome main character that is Sophie Bloom. This review will include lots of quotes!
My favorite thing about this entire book is Sophie’s voice. LOVED it! She’s feisty and snarky galore. You want a story that sounds like it’s coming from a true 16 year old? Pick up this book. Darling did a fantastic job with Sophie’s characterization. I just couldn’t get enough of hearing her talk. She’s quick witted, sarcastic, and screams teen angst.
“You know, something like “poor little rich girl, her life littered with hopes and dreams.” I love “littered with;” such over-the-top drunk divorcee lingo, uttered right before the aging cougar smashed her cocktail into the fireplace.”
See what I mean? She just comes up with the most brilliant things. I couldn’t help but laugh the majority of the book.
Sophie has an arch rival–who doesn’t in high school?!–and was bound and determined to take her down. Bethany is the popular girl who seems to get whatever she wants. She’s also the type of popular girl who likes to make Sophie’s life a living hell. So when Sophie comes up with a plan to destroy Bethany’s night at the dance, I couldn’t stop jumping up and down. The plan, while a bit grotesque, was so funny and something I wish I would’ve had the guts to do if I had a rival like Bethany when I was in high school. True to Sophie, she described Bethany wonderfully:
“To say I hated that red-haired, black-souled cow would be an understatement My greatest fantasy was to poison Bethany slowly, then let her get better before administering a really nasty dose that left her dead and rigor mortised in a humiliating position. Emphasis on the humiliation. The dead would be a happy bonus.”
I just can’t tell you guys enough how much I loved reading this book for Sophie, alone. She made the entire thing for me. But I will say that the story in itself was fun to read. I don’t read Greek mythology books often but Darling wove it into this book in such a way that I couldn’t get enough. It was unique and a fresh take on mythology and I can’t wait to continue this series! All fans of fabulously witty main characters, Greek mythology, and a little romance drama will love this book!
