Hi everyone! Welcome to another edition of It’s Monday, What are You Reading hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. Can you guys believe it’s almost the end of October already? I feel like it just started! I’m kind of sad, though, to be completely honest because it’s been so hot this month. October is my favorite month out of the whole year because it’s when the weather starts to cool off just slightly (let’s be honest, I hate winter so low 70s is perfect for me!) and the leaves start to change to all the pretty fall colors. Only it hasn’t happened here yet! In fact, some of my trees in my front yard are actually starting to bloom again! They are so confused. We had one chilly day all month long and then it was right back up to the 80s again. It just doesn’t feel like Halloween when it’s still super hot, sunny, and green all over. *sigh*
I’ve been kind of absent from the blog the last couple of weeks. I don’t really have a reason why per se, I just wasn’t feeling it haha. I’ve read 5 books in the last 2 weeks which is pretty awesome, it’s just now a matter of actually writing reviews for them lol. Since it’s been a few weeks, this week’s post is going to be a little lengthy so I can show y’all what I’ve been up to!
Last time I posted I was in the middle of reading The Empty Grave by Jonathan Stroud. It was just as amazing as the rest of the Lockwood & Co series. The previous 4 books were building up to this monumental novel and I couldn’t have been happier with how Stroud decided to end the series. My favorite characters continued to be the witty and infectious bunch that I’ve come to love. The villains were even more villainous than I ever anticipated which was awesome. All of my questions I’ve been wondering over the last 5 years were all answered. The Empty Grave left me completely satisfied. Sometimes final novels are disappointing (*cough Allegiant cough*) but I can proudly say that this book exceeded my expectations and left my heart feeling full and happy, despite being sad that this is truly the last book ever for this dynamic team. Thank you, Mr. Stroud, for this series. It will forever be my favorite series and I’m already looking forward to a reread of the series here soon!
Lauren DeStefano is one of my favorite authors and I always jump at the chance to review something new of hers. She has a such a knack for weaving and telling these intricate and unique stories that you can’t help but devour. The Glass Spare is about a princess who discovers she has the ability to turn anything living into a gemstone with a single touch. When her father, King Heidle, finds out, he banishes her from the kingdom. Her only hope to ever go home is to find the one man who can potentially reverse the curse and set her free. I reviewed it last week if you want to see my thoughts on it! It got 4 stars from me 🙂
The Girl with the Red Balloon by Katherine Locke has been on my must-read list since my friend Angie told me about it this summer. I just finished reading it on Saturday and you guys, it’s seriously amazing. Amazing! It’s about a girl who goes to Berlin to feel closer to her roots. Her grandfather, a Jewish German, was the only survivor in his family to make it out of the Nazi terror. Little does she know, but Ellie coming to Berlin sets her spiraling back in time to 1988 East Berlin, a year before the Wall comes down. With no way back to her time and the Volkspolizei monitoring everything everyone does in this fenced in town, Ellie must rely on strangers to keep her safe and get her back home. 5/5 stars, guys, hands down. This review should be up Thursday!
*Coming Up Next*
Up next for me is one of my highly anticipated 2018 reads, The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert. This beauty doesn’t come out until the end of January, and usually, I try to wait until closer to the release date before I review ARCs but I’ve had this book sitting on my nightstand for over a month now and I just can’t push it off any longer. The cover is freaking gorgeous in person and not only that, it sounds amazing, so I think it’s finally time to dive into it. It’s about a girl with uncanny bad luck whose mother is kidnapped by a fictitious character from her grandmother’s fairytale world. She’s been warned to stay far away from her grandmother’s estate, The Hazel Wood, but if that’s the only chance she has to get her mother back, she has no other choice.
